Requirements, Bottlenecks, and Good Fortune: Agents for Microprocessor Evolution
نویسنده
چکیده
The first microprocessor, the Intel 4004, showed up in 1971. It contained 2300 transistors and operated at a clock frequency of 108 kHz. Today, 30 years later, the microprocessor contains almost 200 million transistors, operating at a frequency of more than 1 GHz. In five years, those numbers are expected to grow to more than a billion transistors on a single chip, operating at a clock frequency of from 6 to 10 GHz. The evolution of the microprocessor, from where it started in 1971 to where it is today and where it is likely to be in five years, has come about because of several contributing forces. Our position is that this evolution did not just happen, that each step forward came as a result of one of three things, and always within the context of a computer architect making tradeoffs. The three things are: 1) new requirements; 2) bottlenecks; and 3) good fortune. I call them collectively agents for evolution. This article attempts to do three things: describe a basic framework for the field of microprocessors, show some of the important developments that have come along in the 30 years since the arrival of the first microprocessor, and finally, suggest some of the new things you can expect to see in a high-performance microprocessor in the next five years.

Structure Optimization of Neuraminidase Inhibitors as Potential Anti-influenza (H1N1Inhibitors) Agents Using QSAR and Molecular Docking Studies
The urgent need of neuraminidase inhibitors (NI) has provided an impetus for understanding the structure requisite at molecular level. Our search for selective inhibitors of neuraminidase has led to the identification of pharmacophoric requirements at various positions around acyl thiourea pharmacophore. The main objective of present study is to develop selective NI, with least toxicity and dru...

متن کاملImproving for Drum_Buffer_Rope material flow management with attention to second bottlenecks and free goods in a job shop environment
Drum–Buffer–Rope is a theory of constraints production planning methodology that operates by developing a schedule for the system’s first bottleneck. The first bottleneck is the bottleneck with the highest utilization. In the theory of constraints, any job that is not processed at the first bottleneck is referred to as a free good. Free goods do not use capacity at the first bottleneck, so very...
متن کاملOrganizational requirements for 'open-ended evolution'
In this contribution we will review different conceptions of open-ended evolution and propose our own (RuizMirazo et al., 2008, Biol. & Philos., 23, p.67). Then, we will consider what are the general conditions that would allow such an evolutionary process to take place, with a specific focus on the type of organization that the systems involved should have. It will be argued that a strong ‘dyn...
متن کاملDetecting Bottlenecks in Java Applications
We present MONITORMETHOD, a tool which helps Java programmers gain insight in the behavior of their applications. MONITORMETHOD instruments the Java application and relates hardware performance monitors (HPMs) to the methods in the Java application’s source code. We present a detailed case study showing that linking microprocessor-level performance characteristics to the source code is helpful ...
